The Ph.D. program is structured to be completed within four years. Full-time enrollment is mandatory, with students required to attend classes and maintain regular on-campus availability for consultation during the initial two years, plus complete at least six terms beyond their Master's degree. Timely progression through the program is expected. Typically, coursework and preliminary proposal development should be finalized in year one; comprehensive examinations, dissertation proposal presentation, and approval occur in year two; while the dissertation itself is undertaken during years three and four. While supervisors and committee members provide guidance, students bear ultimate responsibility for meeting all program deadlines and requirements. Proficiency in a second language pertinent to their research area is mandatory, with additional language competency required if the dissertation topic demands it. Dissertation work cannot commence until all language prerequisites are satisfied.
