Established in 1968, the Department of Religion launched its Master's program in 1976 and its doctoral program in 1993. The M.A. operates as a collaborative initiative with the University of Winnipeg's Department of Religious Studies, while the Ph.D. is exclusively administered by the University of Manitoba. Additionally, the department provides a Pre-Master's pathway for applicants holding a B.A. or B.A. Honours with significant religious studies experience who need preparatory coursework to qualify for the Joint Masters Program. Our graduates have excelled in diverse areas including Biblical scholarship, Christian history, global faith traditions, gender studies in religion, interpretive methodologies, and religion's intersection with culture. Faculty research encompasses: comparative religion; scriptural studies and ancient Western religious cultures; Christian traditions across historical periods; faith's role in society; Eastern religions; Canadian religious landscape; ethical studies; historical perspectives on the body; and critical approaches to religious studies. The department boasts internationally renowned scholars with diverse academic backgrounds. Our programs benefit from extensive library resources, with research language instruction available either through the department or partner units. A recently upgraded computer lab and meeting space serves both faculty and students. Religious studies proves particularly valuable for careers involving human interaction—education, social services, public administration, and diplomacy. Media professionals in international reporting also gain significant benefits from this field of study, along with opportunities in publishing and academia. The Ph.D. program combines coursework with intensive research, typically completed within four years.
