Management sciences is an expansive, interdisciplinary field focused on solving problems and making decisions within organizations. It blends analytical modeling with behavioral science approaches to tackle society's most challenging issues. Students gain expertise in supply chain management and optimization techniques while also exploring emerging areas like human-computer interaction, energy systems, and entrepreneurial innovation. With three primary specialization tracks, both students and faculty can tailor their learning and research to align with their passions and career aspirations. The department provides an undergraduate management engineering degree, plus a management sciences option for students in other engineering disciplines. Following Waterloo's distinctive approach, all undergraduates participate in cooperative education, completing up to six 4-month work placements alternating with academic terms. This hands-on experience strengthens classroom learning, delivering a comprehensive, real-world education.
The Ph.D. program in Management Sciences caters to graduate students with deep research interests in the field. Candidates must complete required coursework (adjusted for prior education), pass a comprehensive examination, and produce an original doctoral dissertation. Typically, students finish this rigorous program in four to five years of dedicated study.
Within the Department of Management Sciences, applied operations research develops quantitative methods for modeling complex decision-making challenges in today's global manufacturing and service sectors. Faculty specialists work in optimization, stochastic processes, Markov decision models, data analytics, and decision analysis, with applications spanning healthcare, supply chains, logistics, pricing strategies, energy systems, and production management.
