The Department of Geography and Environmental Management (GEM) at the University of Waterloo provides a dynamic and engaging research environment for both master's and doctoral candidates. As the most research-intensive department within the Faculty of Environment, we focus on cultivating exceptional scholars through comprehensive training in both theoretical and practical geographical studies. Our PhD curriculum is tailored for those pursuing innovative, fundamental research in geographical sciences, typically spanning three or more years. The program primarily operates through the collaborative Waterloo-Laurier Graduate Program in Geography, a partnership between GEM and Wilfrid Laurier University's Department of Geography and Environmental Studies. This unique collaboration establishes one of North America's most extensive geography graduate programs, offering diverse research opportunities. We maintain a strong commitment to research-driven graduate education, frequently involving students in prestigious national and international research initiatives.
