The Department of Geography and Environmental Management (GEM) at the University of Waterloo provides a dynamic graduate research atmosphere for both master's and doctoral candidates. As the most research-intensive department within the Faculty of Environment, we focus on educating exceptional students in both theoretical and practical geographical studies. Our PhD curriculum caters to those pursuing advanced research in geographical sciences, typically requiring three or more years to finish. Most graduate courses are delivered through the collaborative Waterloo-Laurier Graduate Program in Geography, a partnership between GEM and Wilfrid Laurier University's Department of Geography and Environmental Studies. This joint initiative positions us among North America's largest geography graduate programs, offering diverse research opportunities. We maintain a strong commitment to research-driven graduate education, frequently involving students in nationally and internationally acclaimed research initiatives.
At Waterloo, climate change represents a key research priority, encompassing policy formulation, physical consequences, and broader mitigation and adaptation strategies. Some faculty members have specialized in climate change research since the 1980s, with several serving as contributors or reviewers for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) over the last fifteen years.
