Discover the intricate and captivating realm beneath your feet by delving into subjects like geology, geophysics, geochemistry, and hydrogeology. Over its four-billion-year existence, our planet has undergone transformations—some gradual, like the formation of mountains, and others abrupt and catastrophic, such as asteroid collisions. Earth Sciences explores our planet's composition, from rocks and soil to water systems and climate change impacts. We rely on Earth's resources, including minerals, fossil fuels, organic matter, gases, and drinking water. Who uncovers these precious hidden reserves? Geoscientists. Specialize in Geology, Geophysics, or Hydrogeology, and enhance your learning through paid co-op work placements. Upon graduation, you'll qualify for Professional Geoscientist certification, preparing you to create environmental safeguards, forecast natural hazards, improve water quality standards, and beyond. Develop job-ready skills from day one with hands-on training in cutting-edge labs. Engage in global research—our faculty lead projects across 15 countries on five continents. Connect with fellow earth science enthusiasts through the Earth and Environmental Science club (WATROX), which arranges field excursions, social gatherings, and special events. The Department of Earth and Environmental Science provides six specializations across two undergraduate programs. Earth Science offers geology, geophysics, and hydrogeology, while Environmental Science features geoscience, water science, and ecology—all available through both standard and co-op study paths.

Geophysics merges mathematics and physics to examine phenomena within Earth's interior, across its surface, and throughout its atmosphere, as well as on other planets. Beyond resource exploration, geophysicists assess seismic and volcanic risks, verify nuclear treaty compliance, safeguard groundwater supplies, and investigate magnetic events like the Northern Lights. Career paths include energy and mineral exploration, along with environmental conservation and regulation.
