Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies (SMF) is an interdisciplinary field that explores the connections between sexual identities, intimate relationships, and family structures through theoretical, research-based, and practical approaches. Grounded in principles of social justice and anti-oppression, SMF fosters thoughtful, inclusive dialogues about matters affecting all people. This program especially benefits those pursuing or engaged in human services careers such as healthcare, counseling, therapy, or education. Students can select from various academic paths, including a four-year general major, honours programs (with co-op or traditional options), combined honours majors, or a minor. The program also offers a specialized diploma for those seeking focused study without pursuing a full degree or for degree holders.
As Canada's only program of its kind, SMF delves deeper than basic sexual education by examining relationship dynamics, communication patterns, parenting approaches, media influences on gender and sexuality, cultural impacts on sexual norms, and other topics through a social justice lens. The program fosters a close-knit learning environment at St. Jerome's University, one of Waterloo's affiliated colleges, featuring small class sizes and strong community connections. Graduates can pursue diverse meaningful careers in education, counseling, social work, community development, and related fields, with opportunities for early career exploration through the co-op option.
