Focus on a pivotal period in Western civilization's evolution. In Canada's oldest Medieval Studies program, you'll examine the concepts and milestones of Europe and the Near East from Rome's decline to the dawn of the modern age around 1500 CE. Studying medieval history, art, philosophy, legal frameworks, and governance isn't merely about looking backward. This discipline provides meaningful perspectives on contemporary European politics, modern gender roles, the ascent and decline of global powers, the historical interplay between Islam and Christianity, and more - with chances to apply these insights early through the co-op option. You'll enjoy numerous ways to engage with peers through intimate class settings and frequent social/academic gatherings hosted by the Classical and Medieval Students Society.
Our Medieval Studies program highlights interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary methods for investigating medieval Europe and the Near East, the cradle of Western culture. The Faculty of Arts recognizes we operate on the ancestral lands of the Attawandaron (Neutral), Anishinaabe, and Haudenosaunee nations. The University of Waterloo resides on the Haldimand Tract, territory pledged to the Six Nations encompassing six miles on both sides of the Grand River.
