The University of Winnipeg's History Department brings together a vibrant group of scholars, professors, and students at all academic levels who share a passion for exploring our collective past. Our program provides comprehensive course offerings and supports research across numerous disciplines, time periods, and geographic regions - from local Winnipeg history to global perspectives spanning Canada, the Americas, Europe, Africa, and Asia. Historians preserve and analyze history by carefully studying diverse sources including written records, oral histories, artifacts, and visual materials. We strive to comprehend historical transformations while acknowledging past complexities and systemic inequities. As a history student, you'll investigate influential individuals who fundamentally altered worldviews, as well as ordinary people who shaped their own lives through daily struggles. Our curriculum examines cross-cultural interactions and evolving societal attitudes toward race, gender, and social class throughout different eras. You'll develop critical thinking skills to assess historical impacts of colonization, independence movements, and various forms of systemic injustice and social activism.
