The field of Medieval and Medievalism Studies examines and utilizes cultural artifacts from the worldwide medieval era (approximately 500-1500 AD) along with how subsequent periods, including contemporary times, have portrayed the medieval world. This encompasses diverse elements such as folklore, philosophical thought, religious studies, warfare, visual arts, written works, historical accounts, governance, musical traditions, economic systems, and structural design.
Laurier's program stands out in North America through its focus on medievalism. Modern interpretations of the medieval period through films, interactive games, and themed attractions are incorporated into our curriculum. As students advance through the program, they can customize their exploration of medieval history and its ongoing influence, choosing between literary, cultural, or historical specializations while developing skills for various professions - from historical preservation to contemporary medieval-inspired creative work.
Our program provides hands-on teaching and leadership development through practicum courses and instructional support roles. Numerous classes, particularly those involving digital gaming, employ project-based learning methods to equip students with collaborative digital skills. Additionally, students may qualify for paid positions assisting faculty with funded research initiatives.
