The Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies provides a unique interdisciplinary approach to exploring global cultures between 400 CE and 1700 CE, examining history, literature, philosophy, art, and architecture. Our program features faculty expertise spanning Digital Humanities, English, History, Modern Languages, Music, Visual Arts, Philosophy, and Classics.
Available as a combined major, this program concentrates on Late Antiquity through the 17th century.
By integrating multiple academic disciplines, it highlights connections between artistic expression, historical developments, literary works, musical traditions, and philosophical ideas. Students cultivate essential skills in critical thinking, analytical reasoning, persuasive argumentation, and effective communication.
The curriculum covers diverse topics from the fall of Rome to Italian Renaissance, Byzantine to Norse civilizations, including studies of Latin texts, works by Chaucer, Dante, Shakespeare, and examinations of period-specific music, visual arts, and architectural achievements.
