The Honours Visual Culture program explores visual culture's significant impact on society and cultural development. This interdisciplinary curriculum emphasizes the historical and theoretical study of visual culture while acknowledging its expanding global reach and varied audience perspectives. The program features a core sequence of five visual culture courses, starting with foundational classes that examine art and film through the lens of visual perception (how we interpret the world visually). Subsequent courses analyze visual culture through multiple disciplinary approaches and theoretical frameworks, culminating in an independent tutorial where students develop a senior thesis with faculty guidance. Students complement these core requirements with at least 11 additional courses selected from over 100 options across 20+ university departments, each focusing on distinct elements of visual culture. Those pursuing the Honours Fine Arts - Visual Culture specialization can further enrich their studies by taking VCULT 401, an advanced follow-up to their thesis project during their final year.
