Literature captivates, educates, and changes us. It reveals the boundless potential of language, and studying literature provides valuable linguistic and cultural understanding that benefits future PR specialists, attorneys, executives, technical writers, or novelists alike. A literature degree exposes you to the vast landscape of English literary works. As Ezra Pound famously observed, "Literature remains eternally relevant," meaning whether you're analyzing Chaucer, Mary Shelley, or Tolkien, each text offers fresh perspectives about yourself and society. This degree establishes a thorough grounding in English literature while letting you follow your literary enthusiasms. Literature represents one of our three major offerings. You'll discover global literary traditions—from British and postcolonial to Canadian and American works. The curriculum spans diverse genres, from Elizabethan theater to speculative fiction, from verse to visual storytelling. Graduates emerge ready for advanced studies in law or education, graduate programs, or diverse professions in government, commerce, industry, or the arts—essentially any field that prizes superior communication and critical thinking abilities.
Should a student's GPA fall short of honors criteria, they may still complete their studies through a four-year general literature degree. General degree students enjoy the same course selection as honors students, though without co-op options or specialized degree designation.
