The Master of Social Work foundation program is designed for applicants who don't hold a Bachelor of Social Work degree. Applicants need a four-year undergraduate degree and a minimum of two years of full-time experience in human services. Enrollment occurs biennially in September during odd-numbered years. The foundational courses follow an on-campus, full-time cohort format.
Program Outcomes
Participants in this program will:
analyze the complexities, impacts, limitations, and frameworks of critical social work practice
implement critical social work approaches grounded in social justice principles
develop responsible and transformative education, research, and practice supporting decolonization, Indigenous-centered, anti-racist, feminist, queer, and other social justice movements
maintain equity, diversity, and inclusion values in all aspects of their personal, academic, and professional lives
prioritize social justice, Indigenous perspectives, and anti-oppressive methods when engaging with communities, families, and individuals.
Our School and collaborators - including students, staff, instructors, and faculty - dedicate ourselves to decolonization, anti-racism, anti-oppression, and social justice initiatives through leadership, research, and education. We aim to create both on-campus and online learning experiences that foster decolonial-equity, mutual respect, accountability, intellectual curiosity, cooperative learning, innovative thinking, and creative problem-solving.
The University of Victoria actively promotes equity, diversity, and inclusion across all campus environments. We welcome School members and community partners who embrace these values and engage constructively with diverse perspectives across various power dynamics.
Our School provides an undergraduate Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) and three graduate programs (MSWF, MSWA, MSWI), all emphasizing social justice, Indigenous methodologies, and anti-oppressive practices for community, family, and individual work. All programs maintain full accreditation from the Canadian Association for Social Work Education (CASWE). UVic also houses the Centre for Indigenous Research and Community-Led Engagement (CIRCLE) and the Indigenous Mentorship Network of the Pacific Northwest (IMN-PN).
