Become part of a new wave of linguistic specialists driving Indigenous language preservation initiatives. This program prepares you as a language researcher qualified to guide academic institutions and local communities. Gain the skills to assist in the restoration, recovery, and preservation of Indigenous languages.
The MEd program follows a project-oriented approach. We also provide a thesis-focused MA option, accessible by special approval after completing required courses. Both programs operate on a biennial cohort system. Instruction occurs online with supplemental intensive on-campus sessions at UVic. Your schedule includes roughly 3 weeks of classes during the initial summer, followed by multiple 5-8 day sessions throughout the academic year.
Canada's exclusive Master's in Indigenous Language Revitalization (MILR) is a collaborative offering between UVic's Humanities and Education faculties.

Our alumni create meaningful change by: spearheading language renewal projects in Indigenous communities, and
enhancing university-level programs focused on Indigenous language restoration and sustainability.
