The Public History program equips you with historical research techniques and the skills to present captivating narratives from the past to diverse audiences.
This curriculum focuses on public engagement with history while teaching essential research methodologies. Students undertake a cooperative work term, gaining practical experience at institutions like archives, government offices, and heritage tourism locations.
You'll develop a culminating project that synthesizes this vibrant learning experience into a public history creation. Previous student work has encompassed digital platforms, audio productions, historical documentaries, and curated museum displays.
Our intensive 20-month Master's program prepares graduates to effectively share historical narratives with broad audiences. Public history professionals combine rigorous research with innovative communication, serving organizations ranging from cultural institutions to Indigenous communities and governmental bodies. Through collaborative projects with faculty, students explore history's relevance, significance, and contemporary applications while developing professional media skills.

Qualification Requirements

Subject to the admission requirements of the Faculty of Graduate Studies, admission to the MA stream in Public History normally requires a bachelor's degree with a minimum overall average of B+ (6.0 GPA), or a bachelor's degree with a minimum average of A- (7.0 GPA) in the final year's work. Many more students apply each year than can be accommodated in the program. A candidate with background deficiencies in History may be required to register for a year as a non-degree undergraduate student before being admitted to the program. A candidate with significant experience in community-based or professional historical engagement may be considered for admission without meeting the full requirements indicated above.
English Language Proficiency Requirement: minimum IELTS 6.5 (no subscore below 6.0) / TOEFL minimum 90 (no section less than 20) or equivalent
