Our MA program offers in-depth study of French and Francophone literature, language, and culture, featuring an optional concentration in Cultural, Social & Political Thought (CSPT). Faculty expertise spans French, Quebecois, French-Canadian, African, and Caribbean literatures, alongside cultural studies, theory, cinema, theater, Indigenous writings, creative writing, research-creation, queer theory, digital humanities, and both theoretical and applied linguistics.
The French and Francophone Studies MA provides flexible pathways with two distinct formats: a project-based track and a thesis-based option (including the CSPT concentration possibility).
Our vibrant program cultivates a tight-knit community while equipping students with expertise across diverse areas such as French, Quebec, Franco-Canadian, Indigenous, African, and Caribbean literatures, cultural studies, philosophy, film, theater, research-creation, linguistics (both theoretical and applied), as well as language pedagogy and acquisition.
With particular emphasis on digital literacy and cutting-edge teaching approaches, our MA opens doors to numerous professional opportunities.

Qualification Requirements

Prerequisite: BA in French or equivalent
Minimum standing: GPA of 6.5 (B+) in third- and fourth-year French courses. To familiarize yourself with the University of Victoria's grading system, consult the University Academic Calendar
Applicants whose mother tongue is not English and who have not resided in a designated English-speaking country for three years immediately prior to the entry point applied for must provide evidence of English language proficiency
Applicants must also meet all the general admission requirements of the Faculty of Graduate Studies
English Language Proficiency Requirement: minimum IELTS 6.5 (no subscore below 6.0) / TOEFL minimum 90 (no section less than 20) or equivalent
