The Master of Urban Design (MUD) program at the Daniels Faculty emphasizes equity in urban environments, using design practice as a tool to address social and ecological issues arising from global urbanization. Drawing from Canada's progressive context and the Greater Toronto Area's rapid expansion, the program examines how these challenges impact North American cities. While centered on design as both practice and research, it connects to urban planning and environmental sciences, employing creative design approaches to rethink urban policies, infrastructure, and economic systems.
The program tackles real-world problems through collaborations with local organizations, fostering dialogue between designers, policymakers, and community advocates. For instance, partnerships with the Toronto District School Board help MUD students engage with underrepresented communities in planning processes. Additional collaborations with municipal design offices address urgent urban and environmental concerns. Studio courses work alongside regional planning departments, nonprofits, and activists, enabling students to test innovative solutions for tangible urban challenges. Situated in downtown Toronto, the Daniels Faculty positions urban design as a catalyst for positive urban transformation.
This two-year post-professional MUD program welcomes applicants holding architecture (B.Arch, M.Arch) or landscape architecture (BLA, MLA) degrees, as well as qualified candidates from related fields with design experience. Admission requires a final-year average of at least mid-B from the University of Toronto or equivalent standing from recognized institutions.
A professional degree in architecture (B.Arch or M.Arch) or landscape architecture (BLA, MLA). Applicants with a degree in urban planning (MCP, MUP, or MScPl) may be considered for admission if they are able to demonstrate design potential in their application portfolio. Applicants may be required to complete design and/or visual communication workshops before they begin the MUD program, to prepare them for the design studio component of the MUD curriculum.
