The Master of Science in Genetic Counselling is a comprehensive full-time program designed to equip students with both theoretical knowledge and practical expertise for careers in genetic counselling. Graduates will be qualified to collaborate with healthcare teams, collecting medical and family histories, recommending diagnostic procedures, and explaining genetic conditions - including inheritance patterns, disease progression, recurrence risks, and available choices. This degree holds accreditation from the American Board of Genetic Counseling.
Housed in the Department of Molecular Genetics within the Medical Sciences Building, the program benefits from nearly 100 faculty members working across multiple prestigious institutions including the Best Institute, Donnelly Centre, FitzGerald Building, Hospital for Sick Children, Mount Sinai Hospital, Ontario Institute for Cancer Research, and Princess Margaret Hospital. Our intensive two-year curriculum combines classroom instruction with hands-on clinical experience, ensuring graduates acquire contemporary skills for diverse professional opportunities in this dynamic field.
A four-year undergraduate degree from a recognized university with a minimum B+ average, both cumulatively and in the upper years.
Successful completion or proof of current enrolment of undergraduate courses at a recognized university in biology, molecular biology/genetics, biochemistry, embryology/animal developmental biology, statistics, and psychology.
The development of strong interpersonal and communication skills, as evidenced by experience in a counselling setting (volunteer or paid).
English language requirements
International English Language Testing System (IELTS): Required score: 7.0 (Academic) with at least 6.5 for each component.
Internet-Based Test (TOEFL iBT) Including Writing and Speaking Sections: Overall score: 93; Writing: 22; Speaking: 22
Academic English Level 60: Required score: B
Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) Online: Required score: 70 minimum total with at least 60 in each part.
The Certificate of Proficiency in English (COPE): Required score: 76 minimum total with at least 22 in each component and 32 in writing
Cambridge Assessment English: Required score: minimum 185 overall with at least 176 in each component.
