The Department of Classics offers comprehensive graduate programs culminating in Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees, covering diverse disciplines within Classical studies. These include Greek and Latin literature, ancient philosophy (both Greek and Roman), and the history of Greco-Roman civilizations. Our graduate curriculum facilitates in-depth exploration and scholarly investigation across all facets of classical antiquity. While emphasizing literary and historical studies, the program's foundational phase ensures all students achieve proficiency in Greek and Latin languages while gaining exposure to seminal works across major literary genres. This core training serves as the essential groundwork for specialized research in any area of classical studies supported by our faculty expertise.
Successful completion of an appropriate bachelor's program in classics or a related field, with at least a B+ average in the final year. For applicants who expect to focus on the areas of Greek and Roman Literature or Ancient Philosophy, the equivalent of three years of training in either Greek or Latin and two years of training in the other language is recommended. For applicants who expect to focus on the area of Greek and Roman History and Material Culture, the equivalent of three years of training in either Greek or Latin and demonstrated excellence in the study of Greek and Roman history and material culture is recommended.
International English Language Testing System (IELTS): Required score: 7.0 (Academic) with at least 6.5 for each component.
Internet-Based Test (TOEFL iBT) Including Writing and Speaking Sections: Overall score: 93; Writing: 22; Speaking: 22
Academic English Level 60: Required score: B
Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) Online: Required score: 70 minimum total with at least 60 in each part.
The Certificate of Proficiency in English (COPE): Required score: 76 minimum total with at least 22 in each component and 32 in writing
Cambridge Assessment English: Required score: minimum 185 overall with at least 176 in each component.
