The Master of Arts in Classical Studies is a 16-month degree program completed through coursework, a modern language examination, and either a Major Research Paper or Thesis. The curriculum focuses on developing research skills while building a strong foundation in primary source analysis. Students pursuing the Major Research Paper option enroll in six (6) graduate-level courses, while those choosing the Thesis path complete four (4) graduate courses. The program offers flexibility - students may opt out of ancient language requirements for broader academic pursuits or include Greek and Latin courses for classical specialization. Thesis-track students must complete one advanced Greek and one advanced Latin course. All participants are required to take the research methodology course. The Department of Classical Studies collaborates closely with the Waterloo Institute for Hellenistic Studies, fostering a dynamic research community for both faculty and students. Graduate students enjoy personalized guidance from specialists in their chosen field and benefit from cross-disciplinary perspectives. Through guest lectures, research symposiums, and international academic gatherings, the University of Waterloo's Classical Studies department provides a rich, immersive graduate experience. The program encourages global engagement via travel grants, specialized courses, and research initiatives abroad.
