Anthropology explores humanity, examining our origins, evolution, and diverse cultural expressions. This discipline investigates human phenomena through both biological and cultural lenses, adopting a uniquely broad perspective. What sets anthropology apart is its comparative historical methodology and its connections to both natural sciences and humanities. The field analyzes societies across time—from isolated communities to advanced civilizations and modern global networks.
Through this comprehensive approach, anthropology seeks to identify universal human traits while understanding what drives cultural variation and social transformation. Given its expansive scope, anthropology comprises four main branches: Socio-cultural Anthropology, Evolutionary Anthropology, Linguistic Anthropology, and Archaeology. Currently, the University of Toronto Scarborough provides programs focusing primarily on Socio-cultural and Evolutionary Anthropology, with some Linguistic Anthropology courses tied to the Socio-cultural program and Archaeology offerings connected to the Evolutionary track.
