The Bachelor of Anthropology at VIU equips students with versatile skills applicable to diverse fields including legal professions, public service, corporate sectors, education, healthcare, and market analysis. The curriculum fosters global citizenship, with opportunities for hands-on learning through domestic and international field schools and internships.
Anthropology takes a comprehensive view of human existence, examining our species through multiple perspectives: Sociocultural, Biological, Archaeological, and Linguistic Anthropology. VIU's program emphasizes practical application of anthropological principles in contemporary issues like social equity, cultural awareness, archaeological preservation, environmental interactions, and human evolutionary studies.
The Anthropology Department structures its curriculum across three tiers: introductory (100-level), intermediate (200-level), and advanced (300-400-level) courses. Advanced courses are open to qualified third and fourth-year students, with flexible prerequisites. Exceptional students may pursue an Anthropology Honours Degree.
ANTH 212 typically serves as the gateway to advanced Social Anthropology studies, while ANTH 213 is required for upper-level Archaeology courses. ANTH 214 provides access to advanced Biological Anthropology coursework, unless alternative prerequisites are specified.
