Spanish ranks among the world's most spoken languages, boasting more than 590 million speakers globally. As the official language in 21 nations across Europe, Africa, and the Americas, it serves as a vital instrument for international commerce and dialogue. Canada maintains robust trade relationships with the top two Spanish-speaking nations: Mexico (127 million inhabitants) and the United States (57 million Spanish speakers).
Mastering Spanish provides access to a wealth of cultural treasures in literature, cinema, and art, spanning from medieval and colonial periods to modern Spanish and Latin American creative works. Our department provides comprehensive course offerings across all proficiency levels in linguistics, literature, and cultural studies. We urge students to enhance their learning by enrolling in complementary courses from other disciplines. Upon graduation, our students develop analytical thinking about contemporary society and gain profound insights into Hispanic traditions.
Spanish also serves as a gateway to exploring the Romance language family. Our program enables students to refine their linguistic abilities through structured analysis of language components, from phonetics to grammar. With diverse theoretical and applied linguistics courses, students gain foundational competencies applicable to teaching or academic research. Through partnerships with other language departments, we offer specialized training for conducting linguistic research focused on the Spanish language.
