VIU's Language and Culture Proficiency certificate is a two-year program combining reading, writing, and speaking practice with cultural and literary studies in your selected language focus. You can specialize in French, Spanish, Japanese, or Chinese (Mandarin) to gain a professional edge in business and enhance your ability to connect with others.
An accredited language qualification can create opportunities, expand your knowledge of global business customs, and equip you with linguistic abilities valuable for careers in education, research, commerce, tourism, natural resources, and public sector roles.
The Language and Culture Proficiency Certificate requires 15 credits: 12 credits from four introductory and intermediate courses in your chosen language, plus 3 credits from a related cultural studies course. Native speakers cannot earn certification in their primary language as they're ineligible for beginner-level credit. Students may replace one language course with an additional culture course - particularly beneficial for those with prior high school language experience who don't need all 12 credits starting from 100101.
Graduation from high school or equivalent.
Proof of English Language proficiency is required from any country or citizen where English is not the official or first language.
For students who meet the academic requirements but not the English language requirement, conditional acceptance to VIU may be granted. In this case, admission is granted pending completion of VIU’s English Language Centre program (level AP5 for undergrad and Grad Prep for Graduate programs). Exceptions may apply.
International students who are BC high school graduates must have a minimum grade of “C” in English 12 for direct entry into an academic program.
