The Department for the Study of Religion (DSR) serves as a dynamic hub for academic exploration, where students investigate various religious and spiritual traditions through historical, cultural, political, and textual lenses. Situated in one of the world's most religiously and culturally diverse cities, our undergraduate programs draw students from all backgrounds who are eager to explore religion through scholarly inquiry. Our curriculum spans multiple faiths—Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Indigenous spiritual practices, Islam, and Judaism—while also addressing profound human concerns like happiness, creation stories, suffering, and relationships. Whether students come from religious backgrounds or none at all, our inclusive classrooms welcome everyone. The DSR fosters critical thinking, research methods, writing proficiency, and language skills essential for academic success. Students explore religion's intersections with power, creativity, and social dynamics, examining its connections to identity markers like gender, sexuality, and race. Many undergraduates pair religion studies with complementary disciplines such as environmental science, political science, computer science, gender studies, or interdisciplinary fields like international relations and cognitive science.
