Classics explores the cultures of ancient Greece and Rome, encompassing their literary works, religious beliefs, mythological traditions, historical events, philosophical ideas, and artistic expressions. It also examines their geographical contexts, relationships with neighboring societies, and lasting impact on subsequent civilizations up to modern times. The field covers an extensive geographical range (extending beyond modern Greece and Italy to much of Western Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa) and spans a lengthy historical period (from Europe's Bronze Age in the second millennium B.C. to the early medieval era). At the University of Toronto, Classics goes beyond historical examination to address timeless questions such as: gender and sexual identity, concepts of liberty and political authority, family dynamics, the compatibility of democracy with imperial rule, the essence of romantic love, human responses to mortality, and the ethics of warfare.
The Classics Department invites students from diverse academic backgrounds to enroll in its courses, regardless of whether they plan to specialize in the field. Students can meaningfully engage with Greek and Roman history or literature through translated texts (categorized as CLA or Classical Civilization courses) without prior knowledge of ancient languages. The Major and Minor Programs in Classical Civilization are similarly designed for students without classical language proficiency.
