With over a millennium of history, French has shaped one of Europe's most influential cultures. Many of the world's most significant philosophical works, films, historical texts, scientific discoveries, and literary masterpieces originate from French-speaking regions. As one of Canada's official languages, French proficiency is essential for those pursuing careers at the national level across various sectors. Mastering a second (or third) language provides a substantial advantage in today's highly competitive international job market.
French majors must complete an immersive language experience. Study abroad options feature the Frecker Program in Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, the Canadian third-year program in Nice, opportunities at Université de Bretagne Sud, and various work-study placements in French-speaking environments.
The Frecker program offers complete linguistic immersion in St. Pierre-et-Miquelon, where participants take five 2000-level Memorial University French courses while residing with local host families. This program runs each Fall semester and during July (FREN 2300 and 2900).
