The English department at UTSC provides programs focusing on literature, creative writing, and film studies. Literature students delve into diverse textual forms—from classic fiction and poetry to contemporary graphic novels and narrative video games—through courses spanning different eras and cultures. Film studies analyze cinematic works across various historical and cultural landscapes. Creative writing students hone their craft across multiple genres, including fiction, poetry, nonfiction, and screenwriting. Our programs foster critical thinking and writing about artistic forms, their evolution, and their connection to society. UTSC's English curriculum equips students to interpret how people have documented and perceived the world, empowering them to engage thoughtfully with contemporary issues through analytical discourse.
When planning their academic path, students should review prerequisites for upper-level courses and consult the Program Supervisor before enrolling in courses at other campuses. Those considering graduate studies in English should include ENGC15H3 in their program (mandatory for English Specialists) and explore ENGD98Y3, an advanced seminar where qualified students craft a senior thesis under faculty guidance. The Program Supervisor offers tailored advice for students preparing for graduate-level studies.
The English Specialist (Co-op) Program integrates academic learning with paid professional placements across public, private, and nonprofit sectors. This Work Integrated Learning (WIL) initiative helps students build both scholarly expertise and career-ready skills, preparing them for employment or advanced studies in English-related fields.
Beyond coursework, students must complete preparatory Arts & Science Co-op training and at least two Co-op work terms to fulfill program requirements.
