The Contemporary Asian Studies (CAS) program provides a theme-based exploration of modern Asia's multifaceted challenges. It analyzes connections between the region's historical roots, cultural identity, global rise, and future prospects. With a truly pan-Asian perspective, CAS courses span South, Southeast, and East Asia, employing diverse academic lenses such as anthropology, economics, political science, and sociology.
This program equips students for Asia-focused careers by engaging them with contemporary regional discussions. The Asian Institute further enhances learning through international experiences like field schools, study abroad programs, and professional internships. Advanced CAS courses emphasize research skills. While no language proficiency is required for the major or minor, students are advised to pursue Asian language studies, with 1.0 credit counting toward degree requirements.
