Canada's Asian Studies Program stands out as one-of-a-kind. Launched in 1983, it pioneered as the nation's first two-year community college program concentrating on the Asia-Pacific area. After significant development, the curriculum now primarily serves university-bound students aiming to gain comprehensive knowledge about Asia-Pacific cultures.
Through specialized courses and seminars, participants explore the rich cultural heritage of China, Japan, and Southeast Asia. Some classes also examine South Asian societies and Asian communities in British Columbia. Graduates emerge exceptionally equipped to transition into university-level Asian Studies and related social science programs.
The program particularly appeals to individuals with prior experience in Asia through work or travel, who wish to deepen their understanding of encountered cultural traditions. Numerous first-generation Asian-Canadians and international students discover valuable perspectives about their heritage and Western academic interpretations of their native cultures.
The Asia-Pacific region currently drives the world's most rapid economic expansion, fueling today's interconnected global economy - a trend expected to continue. Understanding these nations' geopolitical contexts, daily lives, and cultural principles proves essential for building and sustaining strong partnerships with our Pacific counterparts.
