The Department for the Study of Religion (DSR) serves as a dynamic hub for academic exploration, offering research and education on various religious and spiritual traditions through historical, cultural, political, and textual lenses. Situated in one of the world's most religiously and culturally diverse cities, our undergraduate programs draw students from all backgrounds who are eager to explore religion through an academic framework. Our curriculum spans multiple faiths—Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Indigenous spiritual practices, Islam, and Judaism—while also addressing profound existential themes like happiness, creation stories, suffering, and relationships. Whether students come from religious backgrounds or none at all, our inclusive environment welcomes everyone. The DSR fosters critical thinking, methodological expertise, writing proficiency, and language skills. Students explore how power, creativity, and conflict shape religious traditions and investigate intersections with gender, sexuality, and race. Many undergraduates pair religion studies with disciplines like environmental science, political science, computer science, gender studies, or interdisciplinary fields such as international relations and cognitive science.
Additionally, the DSR participates in The Arts & Science Internship Program (ASIP), a professional work-integrated initiative for Arts & Science students in select programs, including Religion Major (ASMAJ0151) and Religion Specialist (ASSPE0151).
