The Department for the Study of Religion (DSR) serves as a dynamic hub for academic exploration, offering research and education on various religious and spiritual traditions through historical, cultural, political, and textual lenses. Situated in one of the world's most religiously and culturally diverse cities, our undergraduate programs draw students from all backgrounds who are eager to explore religion through an academic framework. Our curriculum spans multiple faiths—Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Indigenous spiritual practices, Islam, and Judaism—while also addressing profound human inquiries like happiness, creation stories, suffering, and relationships. Whether students come from religious backgrounds or none at all, our inclusive environment welcomes everyone. The program fosters critical thinking, writing proficiency, and language skills while exploring religion's intersections with power, creativity, and societal debates. Students also examine how faith connects to identity markers like gender, sexuality, and race. Many DSR undergraduates pair religion studies with other disciplines such as environmental science, political science, computer science, gender studies, or interdisciplinary fields like international relations and cognitive science.
Additionally, the DSR participates in The Arts & Science Internship Program (ASIP), a professional work-integrated initiative for Arts & Science students in designated programs, including Religion Major (ASMAJ0151) and Religion Specialist (ASSPE0151).
