The Department of Physiology provides graduate programs for both Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. Research spans from genetic studies to whole-organism investigations, covering fields such as endocrinology, diabetes, reproductive endocrinology, fetal development, pregnancy and childbirth, neuroendocrinology, cardiovascular and respiratory regulation, digestive system function, sensory systems, movement coordination, brain maturation and aging, ion channel mechanisms, neural communication, cellular excitability, microscopic structures, and brain adaptability. The PhD program focuses on advanced research training, preparing graduates to work as autonomous research professionals. Participants will engage in coursework, deliver and attend scientific presentations, and produce original research culminating in a written dissertation and oral defense. This curriculum enhances students' physiological knowledge, familiarizes them with contemporary scientific literature, and hones essential skills including analytical reasoning, research formulation, experimental methodology, data interpretation, and effective scientific communication.

Qualification Requirements

Students may be admitted into the PhD program after completion of an appropriate MSc degree program with an average of at least A– from a recognized university. Students with excellent research experience are encouraged to apply.

Applicants should have taken courses such as biology, biochemistry, calculus, organic and physical chemistry, general physics, and physiology.

Applicants who were educated outside Canada, whose primary language is not English, and who graduated from a university where the language of instruction was not English, must demonstrate proficiency in the English language through the successful completion of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with the following minimum scores:

???Internet-based TOEFL: 100/120 and 22/30 on the writing and speaking sections.

International English Language Testing System (IELTS): Required score: 7.0 (Academic) with at least 6.5 for each component.
Academic English Level 60: Required score: B
Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) Online: Required score: 70 minimum total with at least 60 in each part.
The Certificate of Proficiency in English (COPE): Required score: 76 minimum total with at least 22 in each component and 32 in writing
Cambridge Assessment English: Required score: minimum 185 overall with at least 176 in each component.
