This program is designed to cultivate outstanding epidemiologists equipped to work, teach, and investigate factors influencing health, disease, disability, and mortality, along with effective preventive strategies. The primary objective is to provide graduates with the scientific expertise and methodological proficiency needed to pursue independent research in epidemiology. PhD graduates in epidemiology should attain the following competencies:
critically assess scientific literature regarding epidemiological theories, hypotheses, study designs, methodologies, analyses, and interpretations; formulate theoretical frameworks and testable hypotheses based on existing literature or epidemiological findings; and craft research questions while designing and drafting research proposals,
comprehend the practical and scientific implications of epidemiological research designs along with related methodological and analytical approaches; identify and assess suitable data for specific research inquiries; evaluate the advantages and limitations of data collection techniques; devise methods tailored to particular research questions; and examine the measurement characteristics of data collection instruments; address ethical considerations in epidemiological studies,
recognize the policy relevance of epidemiological research, and; compose and defend a doctoral thesis that contributes meaningfully to scientific knowledge.
The PhD program progresses through defined stages, each marked by specific achievements students typically accomplish sequentially and within a reasonable timeframe. These stages—overseen by the Program Director—include selecting a Supervisor and Supervisory Committee, finishing mandatory and elective coursework, passing the comprehensive exam, defending the research proposal, and successfully defending the dissertation (both at the Departmental and SGS levels). Full-time students should complete the PhD within four (4) years, while flex-time students may extend their timeline up to eight (8) years, provided they submit an adjusted milestone plan approved by their Supervisor and the Program Director.
