The Environmental Science Doctoral Program draws students from diverse academic backgrounds who are passionate about investigating either the origins of or remedies for contemporary environmental issues through multidisciplinary approaches. This program equips graduates for academic careers in universities and colleges, as well as positions in government labs or private sector institutions conducting environmental research. The curriculum offers comprehensive exposure to current environmental research topics and specialized methodological training for interdisciplinary scientific inquiries. Students holding relevant master's degrees can typically finish the program in four years.
Environmental science challenges appeal to students whose academic interests transcend conventional scientific domains like geology, chemistry, biology, engineering, geography, or physics. Our program supports research initiatives requiring methodologies and perspectives from multiple disciplines. Participants benefit from extensive faculty knowledge, state-of-the-art facilities, and diverse course offerings. We aim to promote the cross-disciplinary collaboration essential for addressing modern environmental concerns, incorporating social science perspectives when relevant. The program fosters peer learning alongside formal instruction, cultivating an engaging academic community at UTSC. Our research and teaching emphasize interdisciplinary approaches to core scientific questions, with faculty drawn from various departments including physical sciences, life sciences, engineering, forestry, and social sciences.
Applicants may be accepted into the PhD program:
Following completion of the MEnvSc degree, an MSc degree in environmental science, or a related discipline, or the MASc degree in environmental engineering or related discipline, or equivalent from a recognized university with a minimum of B+ average in all work completed in the master's program.
By requesting transfer from a suitable master's program (see above); students may reclassify from the master's program after 12 months of full-time study. Transfer from the MEnvSc program is not permitted
