This PhD program maintains core components such as crafting a research dissertation in an environmental sciences specialization, passing a qualifying examination, and successfully defending the final thesis. Distinctive features include three specialized environmental courses designed to enhance professional communication skills:
Strategic Environmental Communication
Contemporary Challenges in Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)
Applied Environmental Management Practices
The doctoral program (PhD in Environmental Sciences and/or PhD in Molecular and Macromolecular Sciences) aims to deliver advanced research training, fostering analytical skills, innovation, and deep disciplinary knowledge. An additional benefit is the integration of either business principles (for Molecular and Macromolecular Sciences) or environmental communication training (for Environmental Sciences) into the curriculum. This program provides doctoral-level education tailored to global demands in scientific enterprise, industry, research, and academia for both Molecular/Macromolecular Sciences and Environmental Sciences—key research priorities at UPEI.
Students must hold a Master of Science degree or its equivalent from a recognized university and have achieved at least a second class standing (70-80%) for this degree. Students may also be admitted to the PhD program by registering in the existing MSc program in Science and transferring to the PhD program after twelve (12) to eighteen (18) months upon the recommendation of their supervisory committee.
