Anthropology explores both the commonalities and variations among humans (along with related primates), examining cultures and societies through a worldwide comparative lens. The University of Toronto has offered anthropology courses for almost 150 years. Founded in 1936, the Department of Anthropology has been home to many leading figures in Canadian anthropological studies. Faculty members investigate contemporary and historical human communities, cultural beliefs and practices, evolutionary origins, and closely related species. The department provides graduate programs covering sociocultural, medical, biological, linguistic, and archaeological disciplines within anthropology.
Admission is offered primarily to excellent students who, by the time of enrolment, have completed a master’s degree in anthropology (or a cognate subject).
All applicants are expected to have achieved grades averaging the equivalent of a University of Toronto A- or better in their last full year of study. Most successful applicants will have finished or be in the process of completing an MA or MSc.
