The Department of Anthropology fosters the exploration and meaningful appreciation of human diversity and shared traits worldwide, spanning the entirety of human history. We achieve this mission through outstanding research, education, and community partnerships, utilizing diverse analytical approaches united by field-based investigation. Cross-disciplinary connections are promoted, with strong ties to departments including Asian Studies, the Institute of Asian Research, Linguistics, History, Geography, Sociology, and the Centre for Women's and Gender Studies.
As Canada's second oldest anthropology program, we boast over sixty years of academic excellence. Our students benefit from committed faculty and staff, along with exceptional resources like the Museum of Anthropology and Laboratory of Archaeology. Currently, UBC's anthropology scholars and students undertake groundbreaking research across British Columbia and internationally.
Admission to the PhD is open to candidates with an MA in anthropology, although we may in special circumstances admit students with a master’s degree in a related subject. In all cases, students applying for the PhD should possess substantive previous training at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels in anthropology. Admission to the PhD program is by application and requires an evaluation of the applicant’s previous work and capacity to pursue and complete original research. Students completing their MA at UBC must also formally apply in order to be considered for the PhD program.
