The Department of Plant Sciences provides students with an exceptional educational opportunity through its research-focused M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs covering agronomy, crop science, horticulture, plant ecology, and rangeland studies within a single department. As Canada's only plant sciences department, we deliver comprehensive training across all major plant science disciplines.
Our department operates from the cutting-edge Agriculture Building, which features 180 research labs and a 30,000 square foot controlled environment facility. Nearby, you'll find 25,000 square feet of greenhouse space, with a total of 1,979 hectares dedicated to plant research. Our recently established Grains Innovation Quality Lab enhances our capabilities in studying value-added quality characteristics.
The Crop Development Centre, fully integrated with our department, serves as a premier institution for crop breeding. Since 1971, its programs have successfully developed more than 350 crop varieties.
Beyond traditional graduate degrees, we provide a unique dual Ph.D. program in partnership with Japan's United Graduate School of Agricultural Sciences. This innovative program requires students to spend equal time at both institutions, complete one thesis under joint supervision, and meet all requirements to earn doctoral degrees from both universities in plant science.
