The University of Saskatchewan's graduate music programs provide students with focused mentorship opportunities, working closely with accomplished scholars and performers specializing in piano, collaborative piano, voice, strings, brass, and woodwinds. Our conducting program offers specialized tracks in either choral or instrumental conducting, tailored to each student's aspirations. Musicology and theory studies primarily concentrate on classical repertoire from the 18th to 20th centuries, with potential for customized study plans approved by our graduate committee. Details about the Master of Music in Music Education can be found here.
All programs conclude with a discipline-specific final project, recital, or thesis. The graduate committee designs individualized course plans to support each student's primary focus areas.
Substantial scholarship opportunities exist, awarded based on demonstrated excellence and future promise in the chosen specialization. Teaching assistantships are also available for qualified applicants with teaching experience.
We offer Master of Music (M.Mus.) degrees in music theory, conducting, and performance, along with a Master of Arts (M.A.) in musicology.
Performance students can pursue the M.Mus. in piano, collaborative piano, voice, strings, brass, or woodwinds. The conducting M.Mus. program offers choral or wind band specializations, requiring 24 credit units and culminating in a final recital.
The M.Mus. in music theory and M.A. in musicology programs require 15 credit units plus a thesis, with some concentrations mandating comprehensive exams and foreign language proficiency. These programs typically take two years to complete, including a one-year residency requirement.
To enrich the graduate experience, the university hosts the annual Fine Arts Research Lecture Series in Music, facilitating scholarly exchange through research presentations and lecture recitals by department faculty and visiting scholars from around the world.
