History serves as humanity's shared recollection. It molds our sense of self, influencing how we perceive ourselves as people, groups, and countries. In today's intricate and varied global landscape, historical study holds greater importance than ever. Examining the roots and evolution of systems and concepts, disputes and clashes, cultures and civilizations enhances our societal understanding and offers valuable perspectives into others' viewpoints, enabling wiser choices about future directions.

Learning history equips students with versatile abilities that prove invaluable in today's changing employment landscape. History scholars become skilled investigators, adept at sourcing information and presenting their findings with precision and assurance. UPEI's History program sharpens students' capacity to analyze evidence and expert views, examine causes and effects, and establishes a basis for crafting real-world answers to modern challenges. Our History alumni thrive in fields like heritage preservation, legal practice, media, teaching, healthcare, community support, policy research, commerce, public relations, and digital data organization.

UPEI's History faculty consists of distinguished teachers and scholars with diverse historical specialties. Our curriculum spans from PEI's regional past to worldwide discovery narratives; from ancient times through medieval periods to modern eras; covering subjects like warfare's societal effects, scientific and medical advancements, and evolving gender dynamics. The Public History course allows students to acquire hands-on training through placements in governmental, heritage, and cultural institutions.

Qualification Requirements

Applicants normally must have a CGPA of 3.0 in all previous University courses. Normally, the Department expects an average of at least 80% in all previous history courses. In addition to the courses required for the major, honours students are required to complete History 4970 and 4980. Each honours student must prepare a graduating honours essay under the direction of a supervisor. This essay will be evaluated by a three-person committee, two members from within the Department and one member of which will be from outside the Department. The candidate must take a final oral examination on the essay. Students intending to enter graduate programs should be aware that many such programs require a reading knowledge of a second language. Undergraduate courses in a second language are a useful preparation for graduate work in history. IELTS (Academic) - Overall score of 6.5 with no band below 6, TOEFL paper-based test - 550 with minimum TWE of 5.5, TOEFL internet-based test - 80 with minimum of 20 in each category.
