Approximately 2.5 million Canadians share a German ethnic and linguistic heritage. Ranking after English and French, the German community stands as Canada's third most populous and longest-established European ethnic group. Worldwide, around 120 million individuals speak German as their mother tongue.
As Europe's most populous nation with 81 million residents, Germany also holds the continent's strongest economy. The German language has grown increasingly important as a bridge language across Eastern Europe following the region's political changes.
Currently unavailable in Prince Edward Island's secondary schools, German language instruction is exclusively offered at UPEI. This setup requires beginners to start with German 101, which assumes no previous knowledge. Students with prior exposure through exchange programs, family connections, or travel may qualify for advanced placement (1020, 2010, 2020, etc.). The 1010-1020 and 2010-2020 course sequences concentrate on language acquisition, while higher-level classes emphasize cultural studies.
