The Department of Philosophy provides Master's programs (both thesis and non-thesis options) and Doctoral studies in Philosophy, available in English or French. Following university guidelines, students can choose either official language for their studies.

The Department collaborates with interdisciplinary programs in Women's Studies (MA level), Medieval and Renaissance Studies (MA level), and Canadian Studies (PhD level).

As the most ancient academic field, Philosophy has spawned numerous disciplines over two thousand years - from logic and ethics to modern developments like psychology and computer science. Philosophers' ongoing debates about their discipline's nature stem from its fundamental role in examining the basis of all knowledge systems.

Philosophy encompasses diverse specializations including ethics, political philosophy, logic, philosophy of language and mind, epistemology, metaphysics, philosophy of science, and aesthetics. These share a common focus on questions beyond empirical science's scope, requiring abstract reasoning and rigorous conceptual analysis.

Philosophy's emphasis on clear argumentation makes its degrees particularly valuable for fields like law. Graduates often apply their philosophical training to careers in law, politics, psychology, linguistics, mathematics, computer science, and natural sciences. Some continue in academic philosophy, while others maintain a lasting engagement with philosophical inquiry. Philosophy's impact spans from technological innovations to social movements addressing gender equality, animal rights, multiculturalism, and fundamental debates about democracy, human rights, global justice, and consciousness.
