The Institute of the Environment provides an MSc in Environmental Sustainability, a joint master's program in Environmental Sustainability, along with a PhD program in the same field.
The Environmental Sustainability PhD is an interdisciplinary program designed to develop experts and scholars specializing in environmental science, economics, law, and policy. This full-time program is available in both English and French. Following University of Ottawa guidelines, students may complete exams, assignments, or their thesis in either language, and receive supervision in French or English.
This PhD program prepares future leaders and professionals with the expertise to effectively create, analyze, and assess public policies and institutions addressing sustainability challenges. Students learn to approach environmental issues from multiple disciplinary perspectives—particularly science, law, economics, and policy—all essential for formulating and implementing environmental solutions.
The curriculum fosters deep understanding of sustainability complexities, critical awareness of contributing factors, and the methodological and communication skills needed to propose and articulate potential solutions.
