The Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability (IRES) at the University of British Columbia (UBC) operates as an interdisciplinary research center and graduate program that combines problem-solving with intellectual exploration. We engage with diverse environmental and sustainability challenges through integrated research and education, examining connections between human societies and natural ecosystems to inform decisions at all levels. Typically, we accomplish this by fostering teamwork among students and faculty, valuing our combined expertise, academic backgrounds, and research methods while embracing our interconnectedness in addressing practical issues.
Due to its thorough curriculum, the program generally takes 4 to 5 years to finish.
RES does not admit applicants to the PhD program unless they have completed a thesis-based master's degree prior to the RES PhD program start.
PREREQUISITES / COURSE REQUIREMENTS
There are no specific prerequisites for the RES PhD program other than you must have completed a thesis-based Masters degree from a recognized institution. As we are an interdisciplinary program, we accept applications from all disciples and backgrounds.
Anyone interested in studying environmental/sustainability problems in an interdisciplinary way is encouraged to apply.
