The Sustainability Science PhD program is designed to foster a just and sustainable world through cutting-edge education that combines scientific rigor with insights into human-environment interactions. Today's multifaceted issues – including climate crises, ecosystem degradation, social fragmentation, and economic disparities – have given rise to sustainability science, an interdisciplinary domain focused on collaborative solutions. This emerging field represents a paradigm shift in applying scientific and societal knowledge to address pressing global concerns.
The SSCI doctoral initiative cultivates leading sustainability researchers capable of transcending traditional academic boundaries. These scholars identify crucial socio-ecological problems and develop groundbreaking approaches to inform policymaking, guide implementation strategies, and establish exemplary practices at local and international scales.
To be admitted to a PhD program, a student should hold either an appropriate master’s degree or, students with a bachelor’s degree already registered in a master’s program, may convert to PhD studies in year 2 of some of the master’s programs. Students will normally be expected to have attained an 80% average and have achieved significant research progress as determined by their supervisory committee.
TOEFL iBT (paper-based and home edition): Minimum overall score of 88, with no subtest below 21
IELTS Academic or Online: Minimum overall score of 6.5, with no subtest below 6.0
CAEL: Minimum overall score of 70, with no other subtest below 60
CAEL CE (Computer Edition): Minimum overall score of 60, with 60 in writing, and no other subtest below 50
PTE Academic or Online: Minimum overall score of 60, with no subtest below 60
Can Test for Scholars and Trainees: Minimum overall score of 4.5, with no subtest below 4.0
Cambridge Assessment English: C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency with A Cambridge English score of 176 or higher
