The Honours Bachelor of Health Sciences program takes a comprehensive approach to health education. Students gain foundational knowledge in biosciences, quantitative and qualitative research methods, and interdisciplinary perspectives on health determinants. This distinctive curriculum empowers students to explore creative solutions for analyzing and addressing intricate health challenges across all ages, both in Canada and globally.
The Population and Public Health specialization enhances students' interdisciplinary training through population health theories and public health methods that form the cornerstone of Canada's healthcare system. Learners will assess health situations from local and international viewpoints, analyze health models, design intervention strategies including health promotion initiatives, identify root causes of health inequities, and assess the impact of cross-sector partnerships in healthcare.
Occupational therapy combines scientific knowledge with compassionate practice, focusing on preventing disability and restoring meaningful daily activities that support health and wellness. Practitioners collaborate with individuals or groups to overcome challenges in performing essential tasks, whether caused by health conditions, developmental delays, environmental barriers, or aging. These challenges may affect self-care, work, or recreational activities. Occupational therapists help clients rebuild their lives and regain autonomy and self-confidence.
The occupational therapy curriculum adheres to guidelines established by the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT), ensuring graduates acquire essential professional competencies. Alongside academic studies, students complete 1,000 hours of supervised clinical placements as mandated by CAOT. These practical experiences occur in diverse settings including Ottawa-region hospitals, educational institutions, community agencies, the university's interprofessional clinic, rehabilitation facilities, or locations beyond the National Capital Region.
