The Department of Linguistics provides Master of Arts (MA) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programs focused on Theoretical Linguistics. Students engage in innovative research across diverse linguistic fields, covering fundamental theoretical domains (such as phonology, morphology, and syntax) as well as interdisciplinary areas (including historical linguistics, sociolinguistics, and cognitive linguistics). The department actively promotes gathering firsthand linguistic data by working directly with speakers of lesser-studied and at-risk languages, while many students now also undertake valuable research using experimental methods and corpus analysis. Both degree paths involve required courses, comprehensive exams (for PhD candidates), crafting a thesis proposal, plus conducting research, writing, and defending a final thesis. The doctoral program additionally includes these key components: coursework, qualifying examinations, thesis proposal development, and the complete thesis process from research to defense.
Typical Completion Time - 4 years.
The following are minimum requirements to be considered for entry into the program.
Admission decisions are based on the qualifications of the applicant as well as the ability of the Department of Linguistics and the University of Manitoba to serve the applicant's intended program of study and area of specialization.
To be considered for admission to the PhD in Linguistics program, you must have a minimum of a master's degree in linguistics or equivalent.
This program is strongly research-oriented; admission decisions are, therefore, based only in part on the applicant's academic record; the department's resources and interests also play an important role.
