Earth sciences explore our planet's history and its life forms, particularly as documented in rock formations. The Earth Sciences Department equips students with both theoretical knowledge and technical skills to address challenges in resource extraction, mineral processing, and environmental conservation. Beyond teaching how to apply physics and mathematics to Earth studies, a geophysics degree offers fundamental training in geological methods.
The geophysics major and honors programs feature specialized field courses and field trip opportunities. Participants engage in a 20-day field course where they operate various geophysical instruments (seismic, electromagnetic, gravity, magnetic, and radiometric); master survey design, data interpretation, and field report composition; and collaborate on projects examining geological and environmental subjects.
Once admitted to the Bachelor of Science (Earth Science) general program, students must speak to an advisor to transfer to the major or honours program in geophysics.
